Seminar: LLM Unlearning

Nov, 2024 - Feb, 2025

A Comprehensive Overview of Large Language Model Unlearning

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) can memorize sensitive information from their training data, raising privacy and safety concerns. LLM unlearning techniques address this by removing specific knowledge from models without full retraining. This work surveys state-of-the-art methods, including in-context, gradient-based, preference optimization-based, and logit difference-based approaches. We discuss metrics and benchmarks for evaluating unlearning, highlight limitations such as the forget quality / model utility trade-off and vulnerabilities to attacks, and argue for localized unlearning as a promising direction for minimizing utility degradation.

Feb - April, 2023

App-Store Screenshot / Inspired by Soulver 3

One of my larger projects so far. The idea was to create a new calculator that is a mix between programming language, traditional calculator, and spreadsheet. In many ways a web based version of Soulver 3. Support for variables, loops, if-statements, units, functions and JavaScript code. As soon as you type, the calculations get updated. Some interesting technical challenges: Creating a fast JavaScript-based parser for the language (Nested Web Workers is a product of this). Another challenge was the text-editor itself, which is largely self-made as stuff like CodeMirror or Monaco weren't flexible enough for this purpose: I wanted the user's "code" / calculations to be blocks (similar to Notion), which would allow easily adding new math tools (e.g. visualizations – I didn't implement that though). A later version of the text editor also included WYSIWYG equation editing (you could write stuff like fractions, power, etc. and it would be rendered correctly) - similar to what GeoGebra has.
